TARPORLEY ROTARY - REGULAR EVENTS
Inevitably some events are so successful and popular they run year on year.
Here's our calendar of 'regular' events.
JANUARY - SCHOOL INTERVIEW PRACTICE
Usually in JANUARY, we help over 150 year 11 students at Tarporley Community High School prepare for job and college interviews by giving them the opportunity to submit a practice application letter and CV in response to dummy job adverts, and then be interviewed for the job. We are always impressed by the many pupils that take advantage of this support that would not otherwise be available. Afterwards winners are chosen, and prizes given to the best performers.
FEBRUARY - PRESIDENT'S NIGHT
In February we get out our posh suits, and with our partners have a bash to honour the year's president - PICTURES. Rotary's not all about fund raising - developing friendship & acquaintance is an important part of building the team.
APRIL - What a Stroke of LUCK!
In April, members of the club, spend the day in a caravan with 6 district nurses (pictures). Enough to raise anyone's blood pressure!!! It is National Stroke awareness day and on Tarporley High Street we provide FREE blood pressure tests to passers by.
High blood pressure is a major contributory factor leading to strokes, and so the tests help people become aware of their pressure so they can take preventive action if necessary.
Around One hundred and twenty people are tested, and of those usually 3 or 4 are referred to see their doctors as soon as possible.
In MAY we have traditionally run a sponsored GOLF COMPETITION followed by a 3 course dinner, giving businesses the chance to provide corporate hospitality for clients, while raising money for charity. 160 competitors usually join us and raise around £3000.
In 2000 we twinned with The Rotary Club of Meinerzhagen. Each May we meet up, either in Tarporley or Meinerzhagen - or on alternate years somewhere in between. Rotary encourages International co-operation to foster understanding, goodwill and peace around the world.
JULY - CARNIVAL TIME
We work through the year with Round Table to organise Tarporley Carnival in July - the village's only event that is for the whole community. Around 2000 people usually attend, and we arrange sidehows, stalls, arena events, displays and competitions. One year we even produced a DVD of the event which we sold on the High Street in Blaggs Radio & TV shop. All proceeds from carnival go to charity.
SEPTEMBER - DONATION HORSE RIDE
No - you don't have to give us a horse! We organise a 10 mile ride through forest, farm, field footpath and some roads, often on land not usually accessible to the public. About 150 riders join us for a super day, and we usually manage to raise important cash for local charirtes. PICTURES and VIDEO
GSE TEAMS. Rotary International arranges Group Study Exchange programmes which enable young professionals (under 30) to spend up to 6 weeks in an overseas district - hosted by Rotarians. Usually in September we play host for between just an evening to up to a week to a team of 4 plus a leader. We arrange visits and trips for the visitors - usually to places of vocational nterest for them. They deliver a prsentation to the club one night and visit other clubs in the area on the other nights of the week - exhausting!
NOVEMBER TRACK DAY
In 2005 we ran our first Track Day at Oulton Park. Drivers paid around £150 to drive their own cars round the track for a couple of hours. It's a very popular event with car and driving enthusiasts coming from far and wide to test their driving and machines. In its second year it attracted even more drivers and is now firmly on the calendar.
DECEMBER. LIGHTS and NUTS
We set up stall and give away free hot chestnuts when the Tarporley Christmas lights are turned on at the beginning of the month, and again usually on the last Saturday before Christmas. It provides an opportunity for the community to come together, and for Santa to sometimes drop in.
---oooOooo---
In April 2000 we launched the Tarporley Then and Now - book showing pictures of the village in the late 1800s and comparing them with how they were in the year 2000. Copies are always on sale in Swaffields and The Olde Fire Station Chocolate Shop. We have also published a series of £1 walk guide pamphlets showing routes around the village, which are also on sale.
